SAMBANDH was founded by a group of eminent social workers in 1992 in Bhubaneswar , Orissa , India aimed at promoting and practicing value of humanity by doing philanthropic activities in tribal and rural areas.

SAMBANDH began it's journey with a group of enthusiastic college students from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar sensitized towards rural and tribal problems in the State beginning two initiatives- ANWESAN (beginning and )AROGYAM ( free from ailments ) aimed at revival and promotion of traditional healthcare and providing self sustaining health security options in 14 districts of Orissa through medicinal plants conservation

SAMBANDH has been engaged in studying and researching the indigenous knowledge system related to conservation and sustainable use of the medicinal plants by the local community, traditional system of the healthcare, agriculture and health practice. With its programme "ARANYAN", SAMBANDH is engaged in the tribal development in the Similipal Biosphere reserve in Mayurbhanj district since 1994. The main objective of the program is to sustainable use of natural resources of the biosphere reserve through integrated watershed management, sustainable agriculture, food security, alternative health practice and equal and effective participation of women in decision making process. SAMBANDH has further programmes of marketing of products through primary producers, women representatives of SHG, farmers and traditional healers. It is engaged in creating knowledge product based on local health tradition

SAMBANDH has a decade long history of Humanitarian response beginning with the supercyclone in 1999. Humanitarian response has been conceptually reinterpreted from relief/welfare capacity development. Realising the level of vulnerability and risk situation in which the community can be severely affected by disasters SAMBANDH has taken one more step forward and works also on strengthening the capacity of communities to respond and cope with disasters.
