Ramakrisha Mission was founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1887 in Belur, West Bengal, India with an intention to promote and practice the philosophy of Sri Ramakrishna.

The Narendrapur branch centre of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama began its journey in 1943 as home for poor and orphan boys from Pathuriaghata of North Kolkata . Ramakrishna Mission Lokasiksha Parishad - the Rural Development wing of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur, has been working in the Sunderbans area for more than four decades. Primarily relief work started in Sunderbans in the 70's as part of basic Humanitarian Response of Ramakrishna Mission. RKM is now committed to take necessary steps to reduce Disaster Risk at community level and focus on community based disaster preparedness and disaster risk management

 
Ramakrishna Mission, being a philanthropic organisation has a century long history of humanitarian response throughout the world, be it in normal or emergency situations. Humanitarian response has been conceptually reinterpreted from relief / welfare capacity development. Ramakrishna Mission with all its good intentions responded disaster with relief support in all possible ways, the intention of Ramakrishna Mission has been reenergized and converted into capacity development of community for understanding the level of vulnerability and risk situation in which people can be severely impacted by Natural Disaster

Ramakrishna Mission Lokasiksha Parishad, the Rural Development wing of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur Kolkata-700103, has been working in the Sundarbans for more than four decades. Primarily relief work started in Sunderbans in the 70s as part of basic humanitarian response of Ramakrishna Mission, after natural disasters. Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama is now committed to take necessary steps to reduce disaster Risk at community level and is now focussed to create a learning environment on community based disaster preparedness.
